In this refreshing and thought provoking presentation, Charles Barnes describes the new Hard Rectangular DriveTM (HRDTM) under development at DataSlide (UK), LLP. The HRD features oscillating—rather than rotating—magnetic recording media paired and massively parallel 2-D read/write head arrays to produce 2 ˝” form factor, 80GB+, storage devices that consume less than 4 Watts while delivering 160,000 IOPS and a 500MB/second sustained data transfer rate. Creating an extensive granted patent portfolio along the way, DataSlide is developing a magnetic recording technology that integrates mature LCD, IC and HDD technologies in a new integration to produce a highly reliable Tier 0 storage solution. The HRD, with up to 64 simultaneous read and writes in its first generation, overcomes the HDD IOPS bottleneck. Because the DataSlide HRD uses reliable magnetic recording technology, it is not hampered by the deficiencies of SSD: slow write performance and Flash memory wear out. The HRD with the Embedded Berkeley Database has been designated as a Design Win with Oracle. As development continues, DataSlide is poised to lead the way with enterprise storage that is wholly green and reliable, with very high performance.
