Technology Collaboration and Standards: A New Agenda

IDEMA has been involved with Standards activities throughout the HDD supply chain since its inception. However, a consolidated industry in tandem with the emergence of the complementary SSD technology provides the impetus for a more ambitious program. IDEMA’s charter for its Technology Collaboration and Standards Forum is:

- To develop standards and practices to continue innovation and to improve the customer experience and manufacturability of HDDs and SSDs
- To achieve measurable goals through a global network of working groups that encompasses by suppliers and customers

IDEMA’s TC&S program is an unbiased forum for the exchange of information among suppliers and users resulting in the production of timely and technically accurate specifications. It is a means of unprecedented pre-competitive collaboration and networking.

The program provides the structure for industry participants to discuss and develop standards, guidelines, and specifications. Task forces and working groups (regional or global) will be formed to address specific industry needs. A series of meetings and preliminary documents will, over time, lead to voluntary technical agreements between suppliers and customers that optimize product supply and minimize cost.

IDEMA’s Technology Collaboration and Standards programs seeks to:

- Boost industry efficiency by reducing or eliminating duplication of efforts, providing new levels of commonality, defining evolving technology trends

- Enhance customer satisfaction throughout the value chain by reducing qualification cycles, factory integration costs and production ramp times, clarifying expectations for suppliers

- Maximize profitability by reducing duplication of effort and spending; reducing product development cost and cycle time; increasing reliability; and easing technology migration
